Mary Beatrice Matney

An Angel's been called home On June 7, 2006 Mary joined her husband of 47 years Ellsworth Matney, her parents, Frank and Elena Barba (Higera), 4 sisters, and her only brother, in Heaven. Her loving family includes her children: Jackson Matney, Howard Matney and his wife, June, Martha Twisselman and her husband, Rick, Kenneth Matney and his wife, Susie: her grandchildren: Mary Hagstrom and her husband, Chuck, Rick Twisselman and his wife, Stacey, Julie Twisselman, Melissa Taylor and her husband, Randy, Donna Chow and her husband, Mike, Kathy Tracy and her husband, Rob, Steven Matney and his wife, Tonya, and Sharon Smith and her husband, Troy, her sisters and brother-in-law, Clara Moraga and Ron and Bertha Young; her foster son and his wife, Ed and Lupe Morshige. Mary's pride and joy were her great-grandchildren: Martha and Hanna Jameson, Ct, Jeremiah, and Karlie Twisselman, Donnie, Justin, and Brandon Baggs, Haylee, Kathryn, and Trent Tracy, Trenton Taylor, Vanessa Smith, and Elena and Sophia Chow. She had four stepgreat-grandchildren: Devin and Austin Smith and Krystal and Samantha Hagstrom. Mary was loving and generous and will be missed by many friends and extended family members. Mary was born July 30, 1920, in Paso Robles, California. She was the seventh of eight children. Mary attended Paso Robles High School but didn't finish because she had to go to work. In 1938 at the Paso Robles Fair she met the love of her life Ellsworth Matney. They were married August 5, 1939 and Mary loved to say the happiest times of her life began that day. Over the next 47 years Mary and Ellsworth would live in Atascadero, San Luis Obispo, Oakland, Creston, Coalinga, finally settling in McKittrick. Mary would become a mother, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a lifetime member and past president of PTA, a Brownie/Girl Scout/Cub Scout leader, an officer of the Juvenile Delinquent Board at Taft Union High School, a charter member of the McKittrick Chapter of Pochantas, and a member of the Taft Lutheran Church. Being a part of Mary's family meant you were special. At least that's how she always made you feel. Mary's life revolved around her family. Her support, confidence, and a snack were things we could always count on. Mary embodied the command to never close your door to a stranger. She didn't know a stranger and never hesitated to lend a helping hand. She was our Angel and we will miss her. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 9th, 1:00 p.m., in the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home Chapel, Taft. Those who wish to pay their respects may do so on Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and again on Friday from 9:00 a.m. to service time.
