In
Loving Memory Patsy "June" Matney Celebration of Life Presentation
Patsy
June (Bozarth) Matney was born on July 13, 1943 in Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma. Her family moved to Lamont in 1951, eventually settling near
Derby Acres. June met the great love her life on a school bus at the age
of thirteen, when Howard Matney first pulled her pigtails. June graduated
from Taft High School in 1960. She and Howard married on June 29, 1963 and
in 1964 they graduated together from Northern Arizona University with
degrees in education. Her first job was as a first grade teacher in
Coachella. The couple eventually returned to Taft where June taught early
elementary school at Taft College, then kindergarten and first grade at
Taft Primary.
Her quiet and patient exterior was misleading of the educator who was a
determined advocate for her students. June encouraged confidence in
children others might have written off. A lifelong educator and persistent
activist for children, June routinely and without regret spent most of her
paycheck buying books and supplies for her students. When the state of
California mandated teachers no longer hug their students she offered her
letter of resignation. The principal handed her letter back. June
continued to hug her kids until she retires as, “it might be the only
hug they get all day.” While quiet, June had an amazing sense of humor
which you’d miss if you weren’t listening closely.
June lived a full life filled with family, laughter, love of teaching and
adoration of her grandchildren.
June is preceded in death by her parents, Joe D. and Inola Bozarth; her
brother, Jody Bozarth; sister, Virginia Dilbeck. She is survived by her
husband of 55 years, Howard Matney; brother, Ted Bozarth and his wife;
daughter, Melissa Taylor (son-in-law Randy Taylor), daughter, Donna Matney
(son-in-law Mark Maciejewski) grandchildren, Trenton, Elena, Sophia, Max
and Bethany, and many beloved nieces and nephews and great nieces and
nephews. She also leaves behind thousands of students that she touched and
loved dearly. A graveside service will be held for family and friends Saturday August 4, 2018 at 10:00 am at the West Side District Cemetery in Taft. The arrangements are under the direction of the Greenlawn Funeral Home Southwest. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trenton Travis now 23 going on 33. Trenton graduated from Cerro Coso in May 2017 with three degrees, Administration of Justice, Arts & Humanities, Social & Behavioral Sciences. Attended Grand Canyon University for a year, where he transferred as he received a baseball scholarship to Post University in Connecticut in the Fall of 2018. He received his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice in December 2019. He is currently working on his Master's in Public Administration with a concentration in Homeland Security. COVID-19 struck and shut his program down while he was on a medical "Red Shirt" for this year's baseball season for an injury he sustained in the Fall of 2019. While home rehabilitating, his baseball and campus were shut down for the remainder of 2020. He continues working on his Master's program. He's currently working as a substitute teacher in Melissa's school district. Trenton, we're very excited for Trenton. He has previously worked part-time at the local pool as a Lifeguard for the past four summers, excluding 2020. He loves being part of the larger crowd. He eats & sleeps baseball, doing some form of practice every day. He is very grateful to his personal coaches for giving him the tools to do as well as he has. Special thanks to pitching and life coaches George Culver and Bobby Matia, batting/infield with Butch Hobson, pitching/fundamentals (get off your butt coach) James Close. Check out his pictures & movies below. Trenton is still fascinated with animals, reptiles, and insects. In addition to the 300-gallon freshwater aquarium with an 80 gal sump filter in our living room, we've added a 4,000-gallon pond feature in our backyard. Outside of baseball, Trenton works out, target shoots, hunts, and fishes. Melissa's mom passed away in July 2018 due to declining health issues. Melissa is doing great, and she loves being a Principal. As for myself, I'm still an emergency room nurse; I graduated in May 2020 with my Master's in Nursing and now a certified Family Nurse Practitioner waiting on California to issue my license to practice. We're all doing very well and extremely thankful!!
